COA (Certificate of Analysis)

Definition: A lab report on a product. It shows potency (THC, CBD and so on) and screening for pesticides, heavy metals, microbes and residual solvents. Ask staff to see it, or scan the QR code on the package if there is one.

A COA, or Certificate of Analysis, is a lab report for a specific batch of a cannabis product. It is produced by a testing lab and is the best way to know what is actually in a product, beyond the marketing on the package.

A typical COA includes: product and batch information (name, batch or lot number, sample date and lab name); cannabinoid potency (THCA, delta-9 THC, total THC, CBD and others, as a % or mg); terpenes, if tested; and safety screening for pesticides, heavy metals, microbials such as mold and bacteria, mycotoxins, and residual solvents for extracts, each usually marked pass or fail.

To read one quickly: first match the batch number on the COA to the batch number on your package. Then check total THC and CBD. Look at the safety sections for "pass." Check the test date to make sure the report is recent and belongs to that batch.

Ask our staff to see the COA for a product, or scan the QR code on the package if there is one. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide on how to read a COA.
