Start low, go slow

Definition: Begin with a small amount, especially if you're new, and wait before taking more.

"Start low, go slow" is the most common advice for using cannabis, especially if you are new, are trying a new product, or have not used it in a while. It means starting with a small amount and waiting to see how it feels before having more.

Why it matters: cannabis affects people differently, and products vary widely in strength. A small amount of a strong concentrate or a high-dose edible can be far more than you expect. You can always take more later, but you cannot take less once it is in your system.

How to apply it. Smoking or vaping: take one or two small puffs and wait 10-15 minutes. Edibles: start with 2.5-5 mg THC and wait at least 2 hours before having more. Concentrates: use a very small amount, about the size of a grain of rice. Tinctures: begin with a small measured dose.

Other tips: try new products at home in a comfortable setting, avoid mixing cannabis with alcohol, stay hydrated, and have snacks around. If you feel too high, find a calm place, breathe slowly and remember it will pass.

Never drive after using cannabis.
